"Truth, Goodness and Beauty in the Healing Arts"

Breaking Your Fast

Fasting can be very healing to the digestive system. How you break a fast is going to determine whether you secure that benefit or throw away the benefits to satisfy a temporary craving. 'Craving' foods, such as bread, cheese, biscuits, or meat are a shock to the digestive system if eaten too soon after the deep rest and healing that a fast provides.

Good choices for breaking a fast include singular fresh vegetables such as grated carrot or cabbage. If you have been on a juice fast you may like to break your fast with the fruit or vegetable that your juice was made from, e.g. apples if you have been on an apple juice fast. The flavours of fruits and vegetables are amazing when your taste buds have been given a break. The excessive need for salty and sugary tastes is gone and one is able to appreciate the subtlety of natural flavours.

VegiBroth
Another option for breaking a fast is a deeply satisfying warm vegetable broth. A vegetable broth, as prepared in the following recipe, is alkaline, nutritious and delicious. This vegetable broth can be taken for several days after a fast in place of meals, and then supplemented with steamed vegetables and fruit as you diversify your diet.

1. Slice 1 courgette, 1 carrot and 2 stalks of celery into small 1 centimetre cubes (I like the smaller pieces as it minimizes cooking time).
2. Place in a pot with 1 litre of distilled or purified water
3. Bring to a boil and immediately turn down the temperature to lowest simmer
4. When the vegetables are soft turn off the heat and allow to cool to eating temperature
5. Add a small sprinkle of kelp (if desired)

This sounds and is very easy and very simple. EnJoy!
