Society vs. Individual Risk of Death - Diet and Disease
Education is the key to health, wellness, longevity,
and freedom from societal dysfunction.

Take
a moment to fully see and understand this
chart....
This chart has been created to show the percentage of
fatalities of people that are subjected to identified
‘risk’ from an outside source,
if they are exposed to this risk,
such as medicine, accidents, war, poisoning, etc.
Note how tiny the risk is from herbal medicine and
supplements...yet
codex alimentarius
has identified these natural treatments as ‘high
risk’ and is actively removing our access to these
safe and effective treatments.
Note: It is only slightly less dangerous to enter a
UK hospital for treatment, than it is to be in the
military in Iraq or Afghanistan!
Now
consider this...
- 2/3 of ALL DEATHS are directly attributed to dietary causes.
- The next leading cause of death is the mainstream, medical treatment for these conditions.
- (The China Study - T. Colin Campbell)
Not only by making conscious, intelligent, educated choices for yourself, but by taking that knowledge out into the world and sharing it with others.
- At least 1/3 of annual cancer deaths are due to dietary factors (American Cancer Society Facts and Figures - 1997. Atlanta, GA 1999)
- 80% of cancers of the large bowel, breast, and prostate, are due to dietary factors (American Cancer Society Facts and Figures - 1997. Atlanta, GA 1999)
- In 2008, excess body weight was responsible for over 124,000 new cancer diagnoses in Europe (Renehan A. Obesity and overall cancer risk. Presented at the Joint ECCO 15-34th ESMO)
- Endometrial (uterine) cancer, postmenopausal breast cancer and colorectal cancer identified as weight related cancers. These cancers accounted for 65% of cancers caused by excess weight. (Tonstad S. Butler T, Yan R, Fraser GE. Diabetes Care 2009;32:791-796)
- Effects of obesity also increase mortality from other types of cancer, including gallbladder, pancreas, kidney, cervix, and ovary, as well as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in women with the highest BMIs compared to those with a healthy BMI. (Renehan A. Obesity and overall cancer risk. Presented at the Joint ECCO 15-34th ESMO)
- Previous studies, including the Adventist Health Study-2, show that following a vegan diet results in the lowest BMI of any group (lacto-ovo-vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, semivegetarian, nonvegetarian), making them less susceptible to obesity-related cancers. (Tonstad S. Butler T, Yan R, Fraser GE. Diabetes Care 2009;32:791-796)
- The January 1992, Scientific American printed that “cancer is most frequent among those branches of the human race where carnivorous habits prevail.”
- Animal products contain potentially harmful carcinogenic compounds that may contribute to increased cancer risk. (Skog KI, Johansson MAE, Jagerstad MR. Carcinogenic heterocyclic amines in model systems and cooked foods: a review on formation, occurrence, and intake. Food and Chem Toxicol 1998;36:879-96)
And Cancer is only one condition, leading to death,
that is strongly attributed to dietary causes.
Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Hypertension and
Stroke are also directly attributed to
diet.
- 80% of coronary heart disease is caused by diet (World Health Organization; Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Disease)
- 90% of type 2 diabetes is caused by diet (World Health Organization; Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Disease)
- Obesity is related to hypertension and stroke (World Health Organization; Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Disease)

Organic vs. Inorganic Food - New Studies
It is interesting to see, from the sidelines, how
much contradiction there has been over the years in
the published results of research into the nutrient
value of organic fruit and vegetables, versus their
inorganic counterparts. For example, the
Food Standards Agency
(UK) published a review in 2009 that stated “there is
no evidence to support the selection of organically
produced foodstuffs to increase the intake of
specific nutrients or nutritionally relevant
substances.”

That review sparked a lot of controversy, as it was
in direct opposition to numerous respected studies
that had found otherwise...and the ‘timing’ of the
review was suspect, given the current efforts of the
EU to ‘dumb down’ organic standards in support of
massive farming enterprises.
Now
the French food agency AFSSA (Agence Francaise de Securite
Sanitaire des Aliments)
has completely contradicted the FSA’s findings in
a review published in the
Journal of Agricultural and Food
Chemistry.
The study analyzed the phenolic profiles of
Daniela tomatoes, grown either using conventional
or organic methods. Researchers found that the
tomatoes grown under organic conditions contained
significantly higher levels of phenolic compounds.
“The nutrient composition of plants, including
secondary plant metabolites, may be affected by
different production systems, such as organic and
conventional,” stated senior author, Rosa Lamuela
from the University of Barcelona. “Organic farming
doesn’t use nitrogenous fertilizers; as a result,
plants respond by activating their own defense
mechanisms, increasing the levels of all
antioxidants,” explained study lead, Anna
Vallverdu Queralt.
Several smaller studies have since supported the
findings of AFSSA, by reporting higher levels of
certain nutrients in organically grown produce. Those
who work in the organic food industry are not
surprised. Yet, it is just a matter of time before
another important study, funded by special interests,
muddies the waters again, providing ample fuel for
corporate food companies to lobby for regulations
that support profit over the nutritional value of
food produced.
Try looking up ‘organic food ’ on
wikipedia
(a website swamped by special interests) and you will
find that they state, “The weight of the available
scientific evidence has not shown a consistent and
significant difference between organic and more
conventionally grown food in terms of safety,
nutritional value or taste.” You will quickly
experience how overpowered wikipedia is by special
interests if you attempt to change this statement, no
matter how many studies you can show that back up the
fact that there IS a significant difference in
safety, nutritional value AND taste.
Study Details
Using liquid chromatography, coupled to mass
spectrometry, the team identified thirty-four (34)
different phenolic compounds in tomatoes, before
comparing them.
When comparing tomatoes grown organically versus
inorganically they analyzed the profile differences
for the content of:
•
flavonols
(kaempfero3-O-rutinoside, rutin and quercetin)
•
flavanones
(naringenin and naringenin-7-O-glucoside)
•
flavones
(apigenin-7-O-glucoside)
•
hydroxycinnamic acids
(p-coumaric, chlorogenic acids, caffeic and ferulic)
Organic production methods revealed significantly
higher levels of phenolic compounds (P<0.05)
Researchers hope to conduct a human study of those
who eat organic food, versus those who do not, to
determine whether the consistently higher levels of
nutritional value in organic foods translates into
better health for those who eat them.

Codex Alimentarius
This organization is predominantly influenced by the interests of large corporations. If you want your voice to be heard then I most heartily recommend that you learn about and support my favourite natural health organization, the Alliance for Natural Health. This flyer was created by them to ‘bottom line’ the issues surrounding Codex Alimentarius control of consumer guidelines for food additives, GMO’s and more than 30 other committees, including guidelines for maximum daily dosages for vitamins and minerals, and the use of herbs. Have a look at the following information and visit the Alliance for Natural Health website to learn more. As noted on this flyer, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”
Nutrient Dense Vegetable - Organic vs. Inorganic
Eating nutritionally dense food is vital for health
and longevity. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables
is heading in the right direction, but the quality of
food is as important as what you eat. Find a source
of good quality organic food and eat it regularly. I
recommend Riverford Organic vegetable
boxes which can be delivered to your home.
Another option is Abel & Cole, where you can
buy by the box or pick and choose your own
selection of fruits, vegetable and other organic
foods. Both Riverford and Abel & Cole have a
market of essential items available online that
you can add to your box order. Bread, dairy
products, wine and packaged foods. Typically I
like to get the large family box delivered once a
week, then I only have to shop for fresh fruit and
vegetables once a week. Well worth the time to set
yourself up with a service like this.
Grow Your Own Hanging Organic Garden
I love this creative idea
from San Paulo, Brazil, where a
family were treated to a home ‘make over’ by TV
show Caldeirao do Huck, that
included this gorgeous hanging garden planted with
medicinal herbs, flowers and spices. The women in
the family already used old food containers as
vegetable planters, but this inspired design by
Brazilian design studio, Rosenbaum, took the concept to
a whole new level.
If you like the idea of an Urban Garden, but don’t
have a great deal of space, have a look at an
Allotinabox; a thoughtfully
designed ‘Grow Your Own’ box kit, make your
choice, and before you know it you will be eating
your own home grown food. Of course, this box is
just to get you started. Soon you will be
confidently swapping heritage seed and expanding
your agricultural horizons. Also have a look at
the Urban Organic Gardener, for
further hanging garden inspiration.
Indian Government Files BioPiracy Lawsuit Against Monsanto
India is preparing a landmark
case against Monsanto, a Multi-National
GMO company, for Bio-Piracy. India claims that
when Monsanto took plants from India, developed
over many generations by Indian Farmers and
modified these plants to create a new GM version
for their own profit, they were in fact robbing
the farmers of India of their property. This
landmark case is being pursued by the Indian
Government with methodical attention to detail so
that it will lay the groundwork for further
litigation if Monsanto continues their assault on
Indian Farmers. An interesting situation and one
that I will follow as it unfolds over the coming
years (yes...years).
Note: A high rate of farmer suicides in India have
been linked to the effects on their livelihoods of
having ‘trusted’ the sales pitch of GM companies
such as Monsanto and Cargill, the consequences of
which has led to the ruin of tens of thousands of
Indian Farmers.
5 Tips for Avoiding GMO Foods
Yet, if there are such clearly researched health risks associated with GM food, why is it allowed into the food industry. A simple explanation for this may be found by carefully observing the chart below:
Monsanto is the world’s largest
supplier of GMO seed and related products
GM foods have maneuvered
their way into the heart of the food industry, with
the help of lobbyists paid by GMO corporations and
the support of government officials who are also
closely linked to the interests of GMO corporations.
It is no longer possible to shop for food at the
market place without being consciously aware of the
GM food industry and it is highly recommended that
you stay up to date and support organizations that
actively fight for consumer interests and rights such
as the Alliance for Natural Health and
the Non-GMO Project.
Tip 1 - BUY AND EAT ONLY
ORGANIC FOODS
If it has GMO ingredients it cannot be labeled organic. Although there
can still be some contamination, the best way to
stay as close to 100% GMO free as possible, is to
eat and buy only organic foods.
Tip 2 - LOOK FOR NON-GMO
PROJECT SEALS
Look for ‘Non-GMO’ seals on participating products,
as an added insurance. The Non-GMO Project is a
non-profit organization committed to protecting
consumers with the use of clear labels and
independently verified non-GMO products as well as
independent testing and research into the health
effects of GMO’s.
Tip 3 - AVOID
INGREDIENTS THAT ARE TYPICALLY GMO
unless those ingredients are clearly labeled
‘organic’ or ‘non-GMO.’ Crops that are typically GMO
include soy beans, sugar beets, corn, cottonseed,
canola, Hawaiian papaya, and some yellow squash and
zucchini/courgette, as well as dairy. If your first
reaction is that you don’t often eat those
ingredients, think again. Corn and Sugar (made from
sugar beets) is in most processed food in one form or
another. Canola and cottonseed oil is similarly a
part of a huge number of processed foods. I watched a
program once that showed the many forms that Corn
takes in the food industry and, frankly, it was
scary.
Tip 4 - AVOID PROCESSED
FOOD ALTOGETHER
I simply don’t eat ‘big corporate’ food. I don’t buy
food that is packaged. No cereals, no canned soup, no
packaged baked goods, no processed animal products.
None! I don’t miss them. I DO buy organic fruits and
vegetables, organic raw nuts and seeds, organic
sauces, herbs and spices, organic grains, organic
‘superfoods,’ the occasional organic cheese (rare as
I am 99.9% vegan) and, where ever possible, locally
grown produce. My kitchen cupboards do not contain
colorful packaging but they do contain real food that
is delicious and nutritious when ‘I’ prepare it.
Tip 5 - EDUCATE
YOURSELF
