Healing Diets

10 Tips for Winter Fasting

Fasting in winter can be as rewarding as fasting in the warm glow of summer if a few simple tips are considered.

1. Use hot water bottles to keep your core warm. If you tend to cold extremities, then rest your toes on hot water bottles as well.

2. When you fast it is so important to rest, and where better than in the cosy warmth of a hot bath. As the water cools, add more hot water. Candle light, a good book, relaxing meditation, and essential oils all add to the experience. When you are ready to get out bundle up in towels warmed on the radiator and get under the covers with a hot water bottle. Lovely

3. Wear cosy socks and comfortable layers. Bundle under the covers. Create an oasis of cosiness where you have all within arms reach and can relax in warmth and peace.

4. Drink warm water with a touch of cayenne and ginger. I like to gently simmer water with grated ginger in it and then add a small amount of cayenne to the mix after taking it off of the heat. There is the view that cayenne and ginger added to water would prevent you from reaching the basal metabolism rate of fasting, and this is a consideration if you are following a strict fast for serious health reasons. Otherwise, enjoy the warm pleasure of ginger and cayenne for winter fasting.

5. Sunbathing, even in winter, is a wonderful and important part of fasting. However in winter, when you sit out in the sun, you will need to bundle up extra warm. Avoid losing core heat. Take your hot water bottle and feather comforter outside with you.

6. As with all fasting it is best not to be busy with work and child care. If you aren’t able to take a complete break while fasting, then juice fasting may be a better choice than a complete fast. Juice will provide energy to keep up with daily life, and if juice fasting you are less likely to feel easily cold during winter fasting.

7. Relaxed stretching will keep your lymph and circulation moving, and is a natural way to heat up your body. However, when water fasting your energy can be low, so only do movement exercise if it feels comfortable and easy for you.

8. Hot Stone Massage. I add this one because it is my secret fantasy to get endless divine bodywork while undergoing a fasting retreat. Sigh.

9. Cosy up with someone you love

10. When you are ready to break your fast, do so with warm alkaline broth. Yum!

Indian Government Files BioPiracy Lawsuit Against Monsanto

India is preparing a landmark case against Monsanto, a Multi-National GMO company, for Bio-Piracy. India claims that when Monsanto took plants from India, developed over many generations by Indian Farmers and modified these plants to create a new GM version for their own profit, they were in fact robbing the farmers of India of their property. This landmark case is being pursued by the Indian Government with methodical attention to detail so that it will lay the groundwork for further litigation if Monsanto continues their assault on Indian Farmers. An interesting situation and one that I will follow as it unfolds over the coming years (yes...years).

Note: A high rate of farmer suicides in India have been linked to the effects on their livelihoods of having ‘trusted’ the sales pitch of GM companies such as Monsanto and Cargill, the consequences of which has led to the ruin of tens of thousands of Indian Farmers.

Academy of Healing Diets with Bonny Casel

The Academy of Healing Diets opens it’s doors, summer 2012, in Torquay, Devon. Bonny Casel has been developing the healing diets part of her teaching for many years and the number of students interested in this teaching has continually grown. Now, Bonny Casel has created a school that focuses entirely on food as medicine, and training students in a variety of natural vegetarian, vegan and living foods approaches to diet and food preparation. Her courses range from fasting and superfoods, through to vegetarian cooking and vegan baking, offering a valuable foundation for students who wish to explore food for their own personal healing and for practitioners who wish to create effective and safe dietary programmes for their clients.

PlanetBox Lunch Boxes - Eco Alternative

It can be challenging to find healthy alternatives for children in a ‘plastic dominated’ children’s world, so when I came across these non-toxic lunch boxes I was thrilled. These stainless steel lunch boxes will keep the lovingly made, organic meals that you prepare for your children’s lunches, plastic free, and the design is wonderful. Many times I have watched children in India, smartly dressed in their school uniforms, walking to school with their stacked stainless steel lunch boxes filled with Dahl and rice and chapatis. Here is the merging of those two worlds.

If you are looking for something for your own lunches, particularly larger salads, try
To-Go Ware. Also made of stainless steel, this company imports my favourite stacked stainless lunch boxes from India. They are wonderful!

Healing Diets Class - Part 3

raw-food-diet-1raw-food-intro-4001556436130cake

This July we completed the third part of the Healing Diets course (The series of 3 Classes starts again this Autumn -
follow this link to find out more). For two of the students attending the class, this was their final class before undertaking their clinical training. Soon both Leandra Costa and Michelle Redgrave will graduate as Naturopaths.

Part 3 of the Healing Diets course focuses on the effect that food has on our consciousness and thus how our dietary choices affect the environment we live in, our relationships and ultimately our relationship with the planet as a whole. I had some lovely feedback from all of my students. Here are some comments from Leandra, our student from Brazil. Leandra is currently a highly skilled massage therapist in London and it is her plan to return to Brazil upon graduation and open a Naturopathic clinic there that includes full cleansing and rejuvenation programmes.

“The Healing Diets workshops have been an amazing teaching on all levels for me. It opened my eyes about food both in terms of my own experience and also its effect on the world.

This course made me think and reflect on my relationship with food, giving directions and teaching for cleansing, regeneration and rejuvenation from diet, fasts, cleanses, alkaline diets, raw food diets and more. I also broadened my learnings into diverse cultural diets and studies, learning about Ayurvedic diet and doshas, macrobiotic diets, and vegetarianism, to name just a few.

Part three of the Healing Diets has been a big reminder of how all of us are responsible for a healthy, clean and fair environment where we can grow organic, healthy foods for generations to come.

I can only thank Bonny for sharing all her vast knowledge, caring and love, It makes one inspired to become healthy and to spread all the good positive information to the world” - Leandra

True health is a multi-dimensional 'field' of interconnections between our inner and outer world. We are not islands. The choices that we make profoundly affect ourselves and the world around us. True transformation is inherent in the process of cleansing and rejuvenation, as we learn about ourselves and experience the effects of release and health on our psyche, mental clarity, inspiration and awe for life. Transformation then expands to contribute to living with integrity in relation to the world and all life.

A clear mind is a welcome mat for inspiration. This class explores our relationship with nourishment and the 'reality' of true healing; its effects on our thought processes, our relationships, and our interrelationships with the environment and the state of the world as a whole. Exploring a range of subjects from food production, the pharmaceutical industry, organic vs inorganic foods, and environmental poisons, to developing compassion, accessing inspiration, and expanding ones circle of integrity, to methods for balancing day to day life and seeking harmony with ones life purpose. Fantastic Class

It has been a wonderful week with Naturopathy students as we have delved into the world of fasting, cleansing and rejuvenation diets. On our final day we prepared a range of living food recipes including fermented nut cheese, rejuvelac, the complete meal salad, raw beet soup, a date nut sweet and, everyones favorite, cashew milk. Now we are all inspired to focus on our self healing and improve the quality of what we put into our bodies. The third part of our Healing Diets class, Transformation, will be in the New Year.

"Thank you for your patience, knowledge and guidance that you so freely impart. My body, mind and soul thank you as all parts have benefitted from your insight and teachings and are all on separate yet interconnected journeys." - Michelle

"As usual it was great to see you and have you as a teacher you always give me a sense of I can do it, of positivity and knowledge. I've done 5 days on the Master Cleanse which felt great, it's empowering, the clarity of mind by day 4 was something else!" - Leandra:)

Healing Diets Certification Course

Beginning on September 4th

It is now less than a week before we kick off the autumn classes with the Healing Diets Certification course. Presenting the most current research into diet and nutrition, this course is divided into three parts:

PURIFICATION In a world where environmental toxins are inescapable, the knowledge needed to cleanse the body of both the toxins themselves and their effects is more valuable than gold. The key to longevity, mental and emotional stability, hormonal balance, energy and vitality and freedom from disease lies with the understanding and periodic practice of deep tissue and organ cleansing. Knowledge you can't afford to live without!

The study of hydration, quality of water, fasting, cleansing diets and deep purification including: water fasting, the 'Master Cleanse', vegetable juice fasting, various forms of fruit juice fasting, alkaline cleanse, and several alternate cleanses for those who can not take time down to cleanse and still need to maintain energy for work and family commitments. This three day class provides the knowledge you need to confidently work with cleansing diets as part of a healing programme, and combined with reading and assignments offers the first step towards the Healing Diets Certification.

REGENERATION
Every cell in our body is replaced over a 3 year period. Most are renewed within a 6 month period. It is what we eat every day, what we think every day, what we aspired to everyday, over periods of time that defines how our body develops. We have the power to recreate ourselves into the body, into the person, and at the level of health that we choose.

This class explores the latest research into diet and nutrition from T. Colin Campbell, Gabriel Cousens, along with studies by pioneers such as Ann Wigmore and Dr. Norman Walker, and then presents vegetarian, vegan, five element nutrition, 3 dosas, living and raw foods, macrobiotic and other healing diets in light of this wealth of knowledge. This is the knowledge you need to be healthy in the long-term. This is the second step towards the Healing Diets Certification.

TRANSFORMATION
true health is a multi-dimensional 'field' of interconnections between our inner and outer world.

This class opens your eyes to the world of food and its effect on you, all life and the planet as a whole.

If you can't come to the class then stay tuned for your next opportunity. Also check back for updates on our students journey through Purification, Regeneration and Transformation!!!

Nourishment

Our relationship with nourishment genuinely reflects our relationship with both giving and receiving love and compassion. Nourishment is the essence of life. Our connection to our spiritual life, our relationship with ourselves, our parents, our family and friends, our community, and to our society as a whole, are all based on the giving and receiving, or lack of giving and receiving, of love and nourishment.
